The Bright Sessions Wiki

Annabelle Margaret Whitney[2], also known as Ellie Wadsworth, is a major character in The Bright Sessions and The AM Archives as well as a minor character in The Infinite Noise. As of The Bright Sessions, she is the director of The AM and is largely responsible for much the harm that it has caused.

Abilities[]

Wadsworth is not an atypical. However, she has managed to make herself artificially immune to Class A atypicals, most Class D atypicals, and notably the abilities of Damien and Helen. She is having trouble becoming immune to physical abilities.

Appearance[]

Wadsworth is tied with Sarah as the third tallest character in the main series, with Caleb and Owen being the only characters taller than her[3]. Wadsworth is canonically a Black woman.

Relationships[]

Adam Hayes[]

Annabelle's nephew. The two were very close, with Adam holding Wadsworth in high regard. This admiration faded when Adam learned of Wadsworth's role in the AM; however, he later expresses interest in revitalizing their relationship.

As of The College Tapes the two do not appear to be on speaking terms, though Adam is informed by Dr. Bright that Annabelle is trying to do better.

Joan Bright[]

(Please note this section contains major spoilers for The AM Archives.)

Bright and Wadsworth worked together at the AM for a number of years and were seemingly close friends, with Joan looking up to Ellie, before Joan eventually discovered that her brother Mark was being held on Tier 5.

Throughout the main series, Ellie is very persistent in her attempts to get Joan to come back to the AM. She schedules regular mandatory meetings with her, which she uses to try to make Joan forgive her and to remind her of how well they worked together before their falling out.

In episode 51, when Wadsworth is in the middle of what appears to be a mental breakdown or existential crisis of sorts, she goes to Joan's office to try once again to convince her to come back. She compares her leadership position to driving, stating that she has developed "highway hypnosis" and has lost her direction, but cannot stop driving because she does not believe that anyone else is capable but Joan.

In The AM Archives, after Helen attempts to threaten Owen to bait Wadsworth into coming back to Boston, Ellie remarks that Helen has "the wrong pawn". Both Owen and Helen seem to automatically realize that this is referring to Joan, who Owen later blatantly says is "the only person Wadsworth values in this building". Helen attempts to capture Joan to use as leverage, but ends up not needing to, as Ellie arrives before she is able.

After Wadsworth's arrival, Joan lashes out angrily at her, blaming her for Owen's death at the hands of Helen. Once Joan calms down, the two have a conversation in which Wadsworth tells Joan that she is trying to change her ways and to do better.

As of The College Tapes, we know from what Joan tells Adam that she believes Ellie is making progress in trying to be a better person.

Rebecca Hayes[]

Annabelle's sister and a neurosurgeon that works with atypicals. The pair collaborated on the Unity project. Their relationship was deeply damaged as a result of the events of the season 3 finale, but seemed to be mending throughout season 4.

Owen Green[]

(Please note this section contains major spoilers for The AM Archives.)

Owen and Ellie were in the same AM training group and began working at the Boston division at the same time. It is known that they shared some sort of friendship pre-canon, but exactly how close they were is unknown.

As of the main series, Ellie is Owen's boss and though he is somewhat of a pushover when it comes to her, it is clear they have many disagreements about the way the division is being run. She is frequently dismissive and cold towards him and seems to treat him as a scapegoat. In episode 51, we learn that the reason for this strained relationship is that Owen became jealous and petty after Ellie was promoted to director rather than him. She remarks that he "needed to be brought down several pegs" and he agrees, stating that she deserved the position more than him. However, it is in this same conversation that he expresses his concern with the way she has been running the division and the way she's been treating atypicals.

In episode 55, Owen partners with Sam, Mark, and Joan to attempt to get Ellie fired. In the same episode, she refers to him as her "right hand", a sentiment to which he reacts with surprise and sarcasm. After revealing (in the same episode) that she has been promoted and will be leaving to work at headquarters, she asks to speak to Owen privately. This conversation is not shown in the podcast, but the others are informed by Owen afterwards that she had promoted him to director of the Boston division in her place. In episode 56, Owen tells Joan that he believes the promotion was a bribe.

In The AM Archives after Helen breaks out, her first move is to kidnap Owen and attempt to use him to bait Wadsworth into coming to save him so that she can kill her. Ellie, though she appears to show some concern when Helen is hurting Owen, remains mostly calm and informs Helen that she has "the wrong pawn" and that Owen had "outlived his usefulness". However, after she hangs up the phone, she is heard immediately getting on a jet to Boston, presumably in attempt to save him and the others without Helen knowing that she's coming. Later after this, Helen kills Owen. Wadsworth reacts to this with shock and anger and seems to be genuinely upset by his loss. Joan initially blames her for his death, though seems to calm down shortly afterwards. Ellie asks Joan where Owen's body is, stating that she'd like to see him before the coroners take him away.
